Safety at School
Safety at school should be your number one priority.
Report all crimes and suspicious activities to school staff and police.
Always say no to things that make you uncomfortable.
If you see or receive information about a gun on school campus, get to safety and call 9-1-1 immediately.
Safety on Metro/Sound Transit Routes
Pay attention to your surroundings when walking to or from transit stops and on buses or trains.
Thieves on transit are on the lookout for cellphones, jewelry or other valuables.
If there is a problem on the bus or train, notify the driver and/or call 911.
Keep all personal belongings close by.
If you have concerns about safety at or near your stop, contact your driver or call 911.
Know your transit routes.
If a person or group makes you feel uncomfortable, cross the street, walk in another direction, or ask other people you trust to walk with you.
Make eye contact with people around you carry yourself with confidence.
If you are Targeted in a Crime
If someone tries to grab you, make a scene. Scream, kick, fight . . . Depending on the situation, do what you feel is right to get away.
If someone demands your wallet or phone it’s always safer to hand it over than risk injury.
Seek help from a neighbor, business or bystander as quickly as you can and call 9-1-1.

Free Summer Meals and Recreation Activities

FREE SUMMER MEALS
This summer, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Human Services Department, and United Way of King County are partnering to host a drop-in summer program offering free meals and recreation activities. Recreation activities are open for kids and teens ages 1 to 18 and may include arts, crafts, board games, and organized recreational games. A free lunch and snacks will be offered to youth ages 1 to 18. The program will run daily from June 27 to August 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday rain or shine at 19 park sites across Seattle.

In November 2015, the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) partnered with Purdue Pharma L.P. (Purdue) to provide free-of-charge naloxone overdose kits and training to law enforcement agencies across the country. This “rescue drug” can reverse the fatal overdose effects of some opioids, including heroin. To date, NSA has trained more than 1,000 law enforcement officers and command staff to administer naloxone.
Furthermore, NSA has distributed 1,743 2-dose kits of naloxone (Narcan) aerosol (3,486 doses). Specifically, NSA has provided naloxone overdose kits to 39 law enforcement agencies covering 21 states, as outlined below. Finally, and most importantly, data collected in the project’s first 18 months document 120 lives saved. Now, 26 months into the project, we estimate that the NSA and Purdue partnership has saved more than 175 lives!

Three Business Resources for Veterans
May is Military Appreciation Month. Each year, the SBA serves over 200,000 veterans, service-disabled veterans and military spouses across the United States and at military installations around the globe.
To veterans: You served our country, now let the SBA serve you. The following are three ways the SBA serves veterans:
1. Boots to Business is a two-step entrepreneurial program offered by the SBA on military installations around the world as a training track of the Department of Defense (DOD) Transition Assistance Program (TAP).
2. Boots to Business: Reboot extends the entrepreneurship training offered in TAP on military installations to veterans of all eras and their spouses.
3. Veteran Business Outreach Center (VBOC) provides entrepreneurial development services such as business training, counseling and mentoring for eligible veterans owning or considering starting a small business.
Seattle/King County Clinic brings together healthcare organizations, civic agencies, non-profits, private businesses and volunteers from across the State of Washington to produce a giant free health clinic in KeyArena at Seattle Center. The four-day volunteer-driven clinic provides a full range of free dental, vision and medical care to underserved and vulnerable populations in the region. The next Clinic is scheduled for October 26 – 29, 2017.

Annie E. Casey Foundation Grants $6 Million!
Port Jobs has been awarded workforce pathway funding as part of the $6 million Annie E. Casey Foundation Generation Work Initiative.
The initiative’s focus is to identify effective ways to connect low-income young adults ages 18-29 with training opportunities and jobs within the maritime, construction and advanced manufacturing industries. The ultimate goal is to develop reproducable programs which help unemployed young people build careers and develop skills that employers need.
“These young adults are facing some of the greatest obstables to living wage careers,” says Heather Worthley, Executive Director of Port Jobs. “This is an exciting opportunity for Port Jobs to join SkillUp Washington partners in creating pathways connecting employers with the next generation of skilled workers.”

Campaign shows ‘problems nobody talks about at cocktail parties’
