A Ballard Food Bank Newsletter

Thank you,
caring community!

https://www.ballardfoodbank.org/

Hope.
Gratitude.
Community.

As I reflect on this past year at Ballard Food Bank, these are the words that come to mind.

This is a special place where every day is filled with meaningful moments: a mom shops for healthy ingredients for meals she knows her young children will like; an elderly gentleman selects low-sodium foods to fit his heart-healthy diet; a family learns they’re able to stay in their home after a job loss because we can help with their rent payment.

Selecting healthy groceries so we can prepare food we like and want to eat…something so simple but so important to our mental and physical well-being. Everyone deserves this. And everyone deserves a place to call home.

Our community is strongest when we make sure everyone has what they need to survive and thrive. I am so grateful for you, our caring community!
Your support does so much:
 – You help fill our neighbors’ grocery carts with healthy fruit, veggies, and protein for their families. Over 1000 households shop for food each week at our no-cost Community Market. – You help fuel our neighbors with a hot bowl of soup, grilled sandwich, and a cup of coffee. 1400 folks come by the free Kindness Café each week for hot and delicious food. – You help bring healthy food to 400 households each week via home delivery. – You help make sure 475 neighborhood kids have the food they need each weekend via the Weekend Food for Kids program. – You help prevent homelessness. We connect with 750 clients in our Community Resource Hub each week, including helping with rent payments, connecting folks to other programs and agencies, and many other services.

Despite the hard times so many are facing right now, I have hope because we continue to be here for all who need us. Thank you, from all of us at the food bank. We can do what we do because you are with us. When you make a financial gift, volunteer your time, coordinate a food drive, or drop by with your food donations, you are helping us bring food and hope to our neighbors.

With gratitude, on behalf of our entire team,

Jen Muzia, Executive Director

These 5 mistakes could worsen the coronavirus outbreak

Every person can do their part to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2. But, in times of uncertainty, it’s easy to make mistakes.

The biggest problem is if you spread the virus to other people, especially those with compromised immune systems. “If you are infected and come into contact with other people, you put those people at risk,” said Dr. Stanley Deresinski, a clinical professor of infectious diseases at Stanford Medicine. “That’s basically what it revolves around.”

Here are five blunders that could exacerbate the current outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19.

THESE 5 THINGS COULD MAKE CORONAVIRUS WORSE

Guidance on the Coronavirus

Guidance on the Coronavirus

Below are helpful tips, resources, and updated information from the CDC about the coronavirus.

Symptoms
Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath

Please note that symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

Prevention & Treatment
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spay or wipe.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
If soap is not readily available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
**The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to prevent themselves from respiratory diseases. Facemasks should be worn by people showing symptoms, health care workers, and people taking care of someone in close proximities (i.e. home care or health care facilities).

– Stay home except to get medical care.

– Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home.

– Call ahead before visiting the doctor.

– Wear a facemask.

– Cover your coughs and sneezes.

– Clean your hands often.

– Avoid sharing personal items.

– Clean all “high-touch” surfaces daily.

**Monitor your symptoms and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

CDC – Preventing COVID-19 Spread in Communities

Preventing COVID-19 Spread in Communities

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.

Protect yourself and your community from getting and spreading respiratory illnesses like coronavirus disease 2019. Everyone has a role to play in getting ready and staying healthy.

Americans should be prepared for the possibility of a COVID-19 outbreak in their community. The community can take measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Protect yourself and your community f

Currently a vaccine or drug is not available for COVID-19. Community-based interventions such as school dismissals, event cancellations, social distancing, and creating employee plans to work remotely can help slow the spread of COVID-19. Individuals can practice everyday prevention measures like frequent hand washing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes.

Decisions about the implementation of community measures will be made by local and state officials, in consultation with federal officials as appropriate, and based on the scope of the outbreak and the severity of illness. Implementation will require extensive community engagement, with ongoing and transparent public health communications.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. AND IN CONTINUING HIS LEGACY

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do… you have to keep moving forward.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We look forward to seeing you at the 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! The day will begin at 8:30 AM at Garfield High School with an Opportunity Fair and Workshops, developed to inspire us to affect change in ourselves and our community.

Our Rally Program starting at 11 AM, includes speakers, music, and dance that celebrates our unique diaspora of culture and community, and shines a light on the creativity of those living in our own backyard.

Our March to City Hall at 12:30, demands that our politicians and civic leaders use their 20/20 vision to see us and to make change in our city. Finally, we thank all who attended with a Community Meal, back at Garfield High School (buses back to Garfield will be available for all who attend the rally).
